DeMbare win Bob 87 Cup

to edge bitter rivals CAPS United in a Harare Derby thriller, dubbed Bob 87 Super Cup, at Rufaro yesterday.
Gutu scored Dynamos’ equaliser in the 23rd minute and then returned to grab the winner late in the second half to end the contest in this see-saw affair which ended with CAPS United down by one man after defender Arnold Chivheya was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Gutu, who was playing his first match for the Glamour Boys this season since returning from national team duty, scored in both halves with the other goal coming from Denver Mukamba’s boot.
CAPS had former Dynamos marksman Evans Gwekwerere and goalkeeper Edmore Sibanda on the scoresheet.
CAPS had struck the first blow that silenced the vociferous DeMbare faithful in the huge crowd in the second minute when Gwekwerere lat-ched on to a miscued clearance by defender Gift Bello and unleashed a powerful left footer that beat goalkeeper Knowle-dge Jimu from inside the box.
But DeMbare impressed with an exciting brand of passing football in their build-ups, much to the delight of their supporters who acknowledged each move with deafening applause, and the Glamour Boys looked a good bet for an equaliser.
Despite being a goal down they continued with their sleek passing game from the back and in the sixth minute CAPS defender Edmore Chafungamoyo made a timely intervention when he intercepted a square pass from Gutu with striker Roderick Mutuma lurking in the goal area.
Dynamos midfielder Muka-mba spoiled all his good work and was lucky to escape with a booking in the 15th minute when he made a deliberate dive inside the box in a desperate attempt to win a penalty.
But former Monomotapa midfielder Charles Chiutsa maintained his visibility in the midfield department on his debut for Makepekepe with a lot of support from Pride Tafire-nyika and Gilbert Mapemba as they fought for every ball while Gwekwerere looked danger- ous when in possession up- front.
Goalkeeper Edmore Sibanda was called into service when he thwarted another Dynamos build-up in the 17th minute as Mutuma turned his markers and charged for goal.
But there was no stopping DeMbare in the 23rd minute when Mutuma beat two men inside the box and released the ball for Gutu who respo-nded with a shot into the far corner beyond the reach of diving goalkeeper Sibanda.
But CAPS nearly restored their lead in the 28th minute when Tafirenyika received a pass from Clive Kawinga and fired a rising shot into the top corner but goal- keeper Jimu did well to punch the ball out for corner.
CAPS were reduced to 10 men in the 43rd minute when referee Ruzive Ruzive flashed a second yellow for rough play on Mukamba.
The former Kiglon mid-fielder was rewarded for his industry when he put Dyna- mos ahead at the resumption after Tawanda Muparati had dispossessed Stephen Alimenda from the centre.
The Green Machine could also count themselves un- lucky after Gutu intercepted a goal-bound shot from a corner.
But big goalkeeper Sibanda then restored parity with a powerful shot that nestled into the far corner of the nets from an indirect free at the penalty arc.
The turning point of the match, however, came in the 84th minute when Dynamos midfielder Gutu broke loose from a CAPS off-side trap to score the winner from close range.
Coach Lloyd Mutasa was thrilled with the victory, which is their fifth in the last six preparatory games they have played.
“Winning is part and parcel of the Dynamos culture and I am happy for the new players for winning their first derby against our rivals CAPS United.
“This will only help boost their morale,” he said.
But CAPS coach Moses Chunga, although conceding defeat, was unhappy with Dynamos’ third goal and felt the red card shown to his defender Chivheya was unwarranted.
“This was our first game with most of our players and our performance was not up to scratch.
“We played in flashes but I think the decision to send off Chivheya was too harsh on the part of the referee.
“It was rather unwarranted and I also think the player who scored the third goal was clearly in an offside position but the referee let the goal stand,” said Chunga.
