GOVERNMENT will not abandon the less privileged members of the society during these tough economic times, says Deputy Minister Christopher Chingosho.

Speaking at the handover of foodstuffs to physically challenged people, orphans and the elderly in Headlands constituency on Tuesday, Deputy Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Cde Chingosho said Government had put in place contingent measures to avert food crisis in the country.

Cde Chingosho who is also the Headlands Member of National Assembly also applauded Non-Governmental Organisations that are working together with Government to provide food for the drought affected citizens.

He hailed local charity organization, Mosi-oa-Tunya Foundation for availing foodstuffs such as rice, maize and salt as well sporting uniforms for soccer and netball teams in his constituency.

“We are here today handing over foodstuffs to vulnerable members of the society who are the first victims when hunger strike. Headlands is a farming area, but this year yields were heavily affected by the El-Nino-induced drought. Physically challenged people, orphans and the elderly are finding it difficult to source food so they approached me and I sourced these foodstuffs for them.

“As Government, we want to assure the nation that no-one will die of hunger because we have mechanisms in place to mitigate the effects of drought. We are also working with NGOs in providing food to the nation and here in Headlands we have partnered with Mosi-oa-Tunya Foundation,” Cde Chingosho said.

Mosi-oa-Tunya Foundation secretary, Miss Regina Mangwiro, said her organisation which mainly deals with youths, physically challenged and the elderly in restoring self esteem and empowerment has a lot more to offer for the Headlands constituency.

“When Cde Chingosho approached us for assistance, we first did our own assessment and this donation is only the beginning because we want to cover the entire constituency. We are not only limited to food issues, but we will spread to the health sector and other areas requested by the MP,” she said.

Jubilant recipients described Cde Chingosho as a man of the people and hailed him for responding to their request on time. Youths also thanked him for sourcing sportswear for them.
