DEPUTY Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Mr Tongai Mnangagwa, says he is eagerly looking forward to Zimbabwe’s opening match of the ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup against Scotland, set to be played at Takashinga Cricket Club in Highfields, Harare, today.
The fixture marks a significant moment for Zimbabwean cricket and for Takashinga Cricket Club, whose rise from a community-based initiative to an international-standard venue has become one of the country’s most compelling sporting success stories.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, Deputy Minister Mnangagwa said the opening match symbolises more than just competitive cricket, describing it as a powerful statement on Zimbabwe’s capacity to host world-class sporting events and leverage them to drive tourism growth.
“This World Cup is not just about cricket results; it is about Zimbabwe telling its story to the world.
“By hosting matches in communities like Highfields, we are demonstrating that our sporting infrastructure, our people and our culture are ready to welcome a global audience,” he said.
Deputy Minister Mnangagwa noted that the youth global showpiece aligns with Government efforts to position sport as a key pillar of tourism development, particularly among younger audiences and emerging markets.
“Sports tourism is one of the fastest-growing segments globally, and events of this magnitude place Zimbabwe firmly on that map.
“Every team, official and supporter who comes here experiences our destinations, our hospitality and our heritage, translating into long-term economic and reputational benefits,” he said.
The Deputy Minister remarks come against the backdrop of Zimbabwe’s growing visibility on the international cricket stage.
Deputy Minister Mnangagwa was also present for the Chevrons’ historic Test match in England last year, a landmark occasion that underscored Zimbabwe’s return to the longest format of the game and reinforced its cricketing ties with major cricketing nations.
“Being in England for that Test was a reminder of how sport opens doors. Now, to welcome the world’s best young cricketers here at home completes that circle. It shows progress, continuity and confidence in Zimbabwean sport,” he said.
The Deputy Minister added that hosting the Under-19 World Cup presents a unique opportunity to inspire local communities and young athletes while projecting a positive image of the country.
“When young Zimbabweans see international cricket being played in their neighbourhoods, it fuels dreams and participation. At the same time, it tells the world that Zimbabwe is open, capable and ready to host,” he said.
