TWO detectives based in Gwanda were arrested on Monday on allegations of stealing US$200 000 from a gold dealer. The two were yesterday still in custody assisting police with investigations. Police sources said the officers based at Gwanda Police Station picked up information that the man was illegally dealing in gold.
They confronted the man and took him to the police station for further investigations.
It is alleged that before they left for the police station the man left behind a bag containing cash with a friend.
At the police station the detectives searched the man but did not find gold or money and released him.
When the man got to his vehicle he discovered that one of the window screens was broken by unknown assailants. The man phoned a friend in whose custody he left a bag containing money. The friend told him one of the detectives that arrested him earlier sent someone to collect the money.
Nothing has been recovered and investigations are underway.
The case was reported to the police leading to the detectives’ arrest.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police is on record warning its members against engaging in criminal activities.
