A TEAM of four detectives, which bravely tracked and arrested a dangerous and violent criminal who had killed a man and injured others in Harare before fleeing to his rural home in Musana, have been honoured for their dedication to duty.

On August 3, last year, a report of the attempted murder of Lameck Nguwo Mazuvanara was made at ZRP Southerton Police Station.

Mazuvanara was assaulted with an iron bar on the head by Saratoga Masere and died at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital.

Saratoga violently resisted arrest and, after injuring more people, he could not be located.

The four detectives received information that Saratoga was spotted at his village in Musana under Bindura District.

A follow-up was made and Saratoga was found sleeping in his house but managed to disappear into the darkness.

The detectives did not give up their pursuit of him and arrested him the following day at Chiroodza Village in Musana.

The team exhibited dedication to their duty as they managed to track and arrest Saratoga who was dangerous and evading arrest.

The detectives were honoured at a Groundbreaking and Merit Awards Ceremony for Harare South Police District on Friday.

Also honoured were constables Dhliwayo of Budiriro, Magama of Glen Norah, Chamani of Glen View, Jamba of Machipisa, Shanji of Southerton, Dongo of Southerton Traffic Police Stations and Garai of District Headquarters who received cash prizes, medals and certificates for being the most disciplined officers at their stations. Police Detective Assistant Inspector Mavuna, Constables Mandevere, Maponga and Moyo scooped the first prizes for Cop of the Year awards and went away with prize money, medals and certificates.

Commissioner Maxwell Chikunguru said their dedication, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to upholding the law and serving the community was truly commendable.

“Your achievements serve as an inspiration to your colleagues and a testament to the high standards of excellence we strive to maintain in our police service. The District leads the Province in its initiatives to combat crime, with arrests increasing from 6 072 to 8 746, resulting from operations, patrols, and raids.

“To our community, I emphasise that crime is on the rise everywhere, I urge everyone to be vigilant about home and personal security.

“It is no longer safe to leave homes unattended, allow young girls to be alone with males, or carry large sums of money.

“As we approach the festive season, I urge all officers to be on high alert and enforce stringent security measures to protect the public.

“Let us work together to ensure a safe and peaceful environment for all residents, deterring criminal activities and promoting community well-being,” said Comm Chikunguru.
