Develop woodlots, tobacco farmers urged

TOBACCO farmers in Manicaland Province have been urged to develop woodlots and grow exotic trees that grow fast in response to the urgent need to mitigate the impact of climate change.

Climate change mitigation expert, Mr Lawrence Mahlangu said reliance on indigenous forests for firewood puts a strain on them and also worsens the existing climate risks.

“To complement Government’s efforts on forestry management, tobacco farmers are being called upon to have plots where they grow exotic trees. This is for their own exploitation as fuel during curing the golden leaf and it is sustainable,” said Mr Mahlangu.

He said developing woodlots also helps in reducing deforestation when farmers cut down trees for fuel to cure the golden leaf.
