Dhewa documentary premieres to critical acclaim

Show Goes On”, the
30-minute documentary produced by Abel Dzobo sets out to show how cancer is affecting the majority of people as well as raising awareness on the dangers of cancer and the prohibitive costs of drugs.

Moyo – who was popularly known in music circles as Dhewa – succumbed to Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma cancer, which he had been battling since 2006.
The premiere at 7 Arts Theatre was attended by music promoters, musicians and filmmakers.
Dhewa’s widow Miniehle Mkweli was also part of the colourful crowd that thronged Avondale Shops for the screening.

Veteran filmmaker, Tsitsi Dangarembga – who was the guest of honour – applauded the late sungura maestro’s selflessness.
“Initially this documentary was about Tongai (but), he pushed its direction to raising awareness about cancer, focusing on other cancer patients less privileged than he was, honestly this proves he was a man of character,” she said.

Partson “Chipaz” Chimbodza, one
of the music promoters who worked with Dhewa during the greater part of his carrier, vowed to support Peter, the late Dhewa’s son.

“The show is certainly going on and I would like to let Peter know that I will support him to the best I can given that he lives up to be the man his father was” he said.

The documentary screening was spiced up by a performance by the late Dhewa’s backing group – Utakataka Express fronted by Peter.

Musicians Suluman Chimbetu, Baba naMai Charamba, Somandla Ndebele, and Jah Prayzah attended the film screening.

The Culture Fund assisted in the production of the documentary and about 50 percent of the sales from the DVD will go to Dhewa’s family while 40 percent will cover production costs and the remaining 10 percent will be donated to the Cancer Association of Zimbabwe.
