Dhewa remembered

brief ceremony was attended by family, friends and music promoters among them Partson Chimbodza.
After the unveiling of the tombstone, the crowd had lunch, thanks to Patrick Mnangagwa, brother to Defence Minister Emmerson Mnangagwa, who donated foodstuffs as part of his pledge to assist the Moyo family.
However, the biggest event was at Mbizo Stadium where musicians Alick “Extrabasso” Macheso, Progress Chipfumo and the late Dhewa’s son, Peter, and Utakataka Express — thrilled music lovers who thronged  the venue in what became a big celebration, marked by music and revelling throughout.
So popular was Dhewa that the gig drew a huge crowd including some fans who came from as far as Harare and Gweru.
Even the heavy rains that pounded Kwekwe  during the night did not deter fans from enjoying themselves.
But while the crowd was dancing the night away, the party abruptly came to an end when a sound mixer blew a fuse due to the rains.
However, by the time the gig stopped most fans had been rain-soaked, but still, they did not complain.
Chipfumo and the Sounds of the Motherland opened the gig with a fine performance that sent many onto the dance floor.
Chipfumo, who has now fully recovered after a bout of tuberculosis, mesmerised the crowd with his fast-paced beats which were effortlessly delivered.
“It is an honour to play at such an event. Dhewa’s music will live forever,” he said backstage.
Macheso and his Orchestra Mberikwazvo outfit were fired up and they, too, did not disappoint.
Part of his set featured some of the new songs which are still bubbling under but to his (Macheso) surprise, fans could sing along to the yet-to-be named songs.
This shows how much people follow Extrabasso’s music and it is little wonder why he is one of the most sought after musicians in Zimbabwe at the moment.
The Utakataka Express band members,  who were dressed in red designer wear, ended the party prematurely, though on a high note. Even without the nomadic chanter Shiga Shiga, the groups is still holding its own and Peter is improving both vocally and artistically.
In fact, there are a lot of changes that have taken place since Peter took over the reigns of his father’s group.
“I would like to thank you all for coming to this special occasion, I know you could have been anywhere but you chose to come and celebrate with us,” Peter said to wild cheers from the crowd.
The only disappointment was that “Officer”, one of the popular Utakataka Express dancers, did not have a chance to showcase his famed officer dance due to the rains otherwise the gig was worthwhile.
