The Zimbabwean diaspora in Saudi Arabia has called for the immediate removal of economic sanctions imposed by some Western countries.
This comes after the country on Friday last week joined the African Union and other progressive nations in commemorating the SADC Anti-Sanctions Day.
The call by Zimbabweans in Riyadh is part of a broader movement among the Zimbabwean diaspora, who have heeded President Mnangagwa’s “Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo” mantra and are using their spaces to advocate for brand Zimbabwe.
With increased visibility and engagement, they hope to influence policy changes that will benefit Zimbabwe and its citizens.
“As concerned and affected Zimbabwean citizens in the diaspora, we unequivocally denounce and glare upon the illegal sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe, which have caused significant harm to the nation’s economy, image and, consequently, its citizens,” reads part of the statement.
“These unnecessary, albeit punitive measures disproportionately affect already vulnerable populations, exacerbating poverty, limiting access to essential services, and hindering development efforts.
“Sanctions undermine the principles of sovereignty and self-determination, often failing to achieve their intended political outcomes, while perpetuating suffering and depriving common citizens of the right to be treated with human decency”.
The Diaspora described the sanctions as “illegal and neo-colonialist”, calling for dialogue, reconciliation, and support for the people of Zimbabwe in their quest for peace and prosperity.
“It is an essential component of sovereignty to prioritise engagement and cooperation over isolation, allowing Zimbabwe to chart its own path towards recovery and growth. Let us work together to foster a brighter future for all Zimbabweans,” said the Saudi Arabian community.
Ambassador Jonathan Wutawunashe is the country’s representative in Saudi Arabia and has been actively involved in marketing Zimbabwe as a safe investment destination.
