TWO women, reportedly mentally challenged, from Gombakomba Village in Mutare District died yesterday after a room they were locked up in caught fire.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reports a tragic incident which occurred on Saturday, August 8, 2026 in Gombakomba Village, where two women aged 18 and 29, who were reportedly mentally challenged, died after a fire broke out in the room in which they had been locked.
“The bodies of the two victims were conveyed to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations,” said Commissioner Nyathi.
He added that police are conducting comprehensive investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Commissioner Nyathi called on communities to look after vulnerable people.
“Police are urging members of the public to exercise caution and ensure the safety and wellbeing of vulnerable persons, particularly those requiring special care and supervision,” he said.
