SOUTH Africa-based kwaito lyricist Diliza is no longer on Oskido’s famed Kalawa Jazzme stable, with the Zimbabwean finding new shelter under the wing of Professor’s Proper Files, a label which is a subsidiary of global music distribution giant, Sony Music Entertainment.
After a few years in which some felt that he, alongside two other members of kwaito group Stiff, had been languishing on the sidelines without an album release, Diliza moved house and is now working under the tutelage of his mentor and serial hit-maker, Professor.
In an interview, Diliza revealed that despite the common perception that they had been sidelined by Kalawa, this was not true as Stiff had since left the stable. He added that they had so far not released an album due to Sony’s swamped artiste roster which meant that, as latecomers, they simply needed to await their turn.
“We’re now under Proper Files and they’re distributed by Sony. So by the time we moved to Sony they already had release dates of albums coming out this year from other artistes and this is why they released our single instead. They’re swamped with artistes who are releasing albums in the near future. So the reason why we haven’t released is not because Oskido decides for us. Kalawa has a distribution deal with Universal,” he said.
Diliza revealed that despite severing ties with them, Kalawa was still very much in his DNA as Proper Files was a close cousin of the legendary kwaito and house music stable.
“We’re under the wing of Professor now but the stable is a sister company of Kalawa. I still do a lot of work for Kalawa and you can find evidence of this in the recent track that I did for Spikiri,” he said.
Diliza said that he was still in contact with his former boss and would once again be a part of this year’s Kalawa Homecoming.
“I’m one of his boys and we pushed this Homecoming movement so Stiff will be there again this year,” he said.
