ZIMBABWE were relegated from tennis’ Davis Cup World Group II to Group III after losing 2-3 to Uruguay in a play-off tie at Harare Sports Club.
Courtney Lock, who held the key to Zimbabwe remaining in Group II, lost the decider 3-6, 6-4, 4-6 to Ignacio Carou in a tightly contested match yesterday.
Courtney, who looked on course to a sensational win, leading 4-3 in the third set, agonisingly failed to hold on and went on to lose the match.
The play-off started on Friday and was set to have been completed on Saturday, but rain affected play resulting in the decider being finally played yesterday.
Courtney said he was completely devastated by the defeat.
“I am heartbroken,” he said.
“The stage was set and the team and everyone were supporting me. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get it done.
“Benjamin (his older brother) told me in the locker room that it’s not the end, but just the start of something. I have never been this heartbroken after a match. I will take a few days and get back to work. Next time I get to this position I want to work hard and get better results,” said Courtney.
Zimbabwe captain, Takanyi Garanganga, said the team lost the momentum when it mattered most despite the spirited performance by Courtney.
“Emotions were involved in the three or four-day long tie. We lost momentum, but he fought well. Courtney did a good job, he carried us to the end although it didn’t count at that particular moment.
“The rains affected both sides. We used it as best as we could. Tennis is really emotional considering the momentum. We have always been on point with preparations and we were focusing on winning the tie,” he said.
Carou said it was a difficult tie to win.
“It was a hard match to win for us after three days of play because of the rain. It was a very difficult, but close tie for me and the whole team,” he said.
