The City of Harare says the recurring sewer overflows at Mbare Musika are being caused by a collapsed section of the trunk sewer in the densely populated Majubheki settlement, where access challenges have made repairs difficult.
In a statement, City of Harare spokesperson Mr Stanley Gama said the damaged sewer lies about three metres underground, making excavation with heavy machinery impractical.
He said a permanent solution under Phase Two of the Majubheki sewer upgrade project will involve constructing a 250mm diversion sewer line along Jack Bakasa Road to bypass the collapsed section before reconnecting to the Harare Street sewer line leading to Adam Chigwida Street.
“This intervention will restore hydraulic flows from Annex, Vito, Mbare Musika and the long-distance bus rank, eliminating recurrent backlogs,” reads the statement.
He said work is expected to start soon.
