THE sponsor of the Southern Region top goal scorer award a�� Nokel Security a�� has upped stakes in the league by announcing an award for the player that scores the highest number of goals at the end of the season.
But there is a catch.
The player must score 22 or more goals when the curtain comes down at the end of the year to take home the $200 prize money.
Last season Ishmael Wadi was the overall top goal scorer while playing for Bulawayo Chiefs with 10 goals. He moved to Premiership club FC Platinum at the beginning of the 2016 season.
a�?We hope the award will motivate strikers to work harder and surpass the 10 goals that were scored last year by Wadi. On top of the $150 that we award to the overall top goal scorer at the end of the year, the player who scores 22 goals or more will walk away with $200,a�? said Nokel Security director Kenneth Mhlophe.
The security company also sponsors the top goal scorer of the month to the tune of $150. In April Lungile Nyathi of Amagagasi won the award while Fortune Nkomazana of Bantu Rovers and former Amagagasi striker Nhlanhla Ndlovu shared the award in May.
Winners for the month of June are expected to be named this weekend.
In league matches pencilled for this weekend log leaders Bantu Rovers are at home to ZRP Hwange at Luveve Stadium on today while Victoria Falls Tigers play host to ZRP Bulawayo Province in the resort town.
In mid-week fixtures Bulawayo Chiefs travel to Turk Mine for a date with Casmyn on Wednesday.
