AT just 23, Philasande Nkala, popularly known as DJ “PHP” from Bulawayo’s Entumbane suburb, has gone beyond his decks by creating a dynamic dance group for young people in a bid to steer them away from substance abuse.

In an interview, he said that his DJing career began in 2021 and his sounds are a dynamic blend of genres that embrace diversity.

“When it comes to my performance, I do not specialise in a specific type of genre. I incorporate various genres to create an engaging atmosphere with my audience,” said Nkala.

He noted that his wish is to share a stage with one of the biggest gurus in the entertainment industry.

Responding to what is unique about him that sets him apart from others in the same field, Nkala said that he ensures he delivers performances to the client’s satisfaction.

According to Nkala, his inspiration to form a dance group was driven during his high school days by observing local dance groups that would be doing their rehearsals on his way from school, which sparked envy that transformed into determination to create something remarkable.

He did his primary education at Manyewu Primary School.

“I used to envy Snipers from Njube whenever they were doing their rehearsals, which in turn gave me the drive to form a dance group called International Movement,” he said.

The dance group was formed in 2019 and currently comprises 30 members, catering to individuals from 16 years of age and above, including school leavers and young adults.

“By targeting young people, I hope to captivate them and redirect their attention from the allure of drug use and abuse by providing a positive outlet for them to keep occupied,” said Nkala.

Nkala said that his dance group caters to different occasions that encompass weddings, birthday parties, and honouring life’s precious moments at memorial services, especially in rural areas.

In addition, Nkala noted that the crew’s talent extends beyond dancing as they incorporate acting and storytelling to deliver multidimensional shows.

“Our performances usually focus on the themes of teenage pregnancy, drug use, and abuse, using dance and drama to educate and raise awareness,” he explained.

He further noted that the members are able to sustain themselves financially through the income generated from events and functions.

Nkala said that the group’s dance style is a fusion of hip-hop, pantsula, amapiano, and gqom to engage the audience.

Responding to who comes up with dance moves for the crew, Nkala pointed out that they have an in-house choreographer who is part of the group and also happens to be one of the top dancers, considering that he was there from when the group was established.

“Our group’s dance routines are crafted by our in-house choreographer, who ensures that the group perfects its dance moves and that every performance is a memorable experience,” he said.

Nkala said that juggling being on the decks and maintaining the crew, which is still growing, proved to be quite a challenge, which saw him enlisting an assistant to help him balance both.

Speaking on the challenges, Nkala said that the group keeps on growing, which tends to have an impact on the kits and attires as they will not be enough for the whole crew.

He said that an attire sponsor would alleviate the logistical burdens, boosting their confidence and stage presence.

Nkala said he aims to establish his dance group as a catalyst for social change, utilising performances to inspire and educate youth, guiding them toward positive life choices, and empowering them to become active, responsible citizens.
