Renowned stand-up comedian Doc Vikela celebrated his birthday in style on Tuesday night at Gaby’s Restaurant during the Short Time comedy show. Fellow comedians, musicians and filmmakers gathered in their numbers to celebrate his 29th birthday.
Artsites including Simba the Comic King, Tatenda Mbudzi, Macdonald “Macdee” Chidavaenzi, Leonard Mapfumo and Blessing Chinyanga attended the event.
Doc Vikela was the man of the night and he was being “roasted” by other comedians as a way to celebrate his birthday.
Jokes about his dark complexion were made even by the audience.
Doc Vikela also showed off his comic prowess by performing that night and he was on a hilarious tip and no one was immune to his satirical jokes.
The Masvingo-bred comedian was very delighted to celebrate his birthday with the people he loves and especially with his workmates.
“It is a blessing you know. Hakusi kuchenjera kusara takararama, Tuku akaimba (It’s not that we are wise that we are still alive as Tuku notes in a song). Every day is an accomplishment and I have 29 years of accomplishments.
“All I can say and ask to my fans is, are you ready? Big things are coming, no doubt,” he said.
The cake was smudged on his face as a way of baptising him into the new year of his life.
Stand-up comedy is fresh in the entertainment hub hence Doc Vikela and fellow comedian Simba the Comic King developed a comedy brand called Simuka Comedy.
Doc Vikela uses it to nurture new talent and wants to eventually export Zimbabwean comedy. Simuka Comedy now puts on four comedy shows a month in Harare and has 10 comedians working full-time in stand-up.
