AN 84-year-old man from Tandi in Makoni District was left horrified when his dog returned home carrying the head of a missing villager, sparking a grisly discovery that has stunned the local community.
The elderly man, Robert Kanyuchi, was sitting at his homestead when the dog appeared with a human skull, which it dropped at his feet.
Before he could recover from the shock, the animal disappeared again and soon returned with another human bone.
The disturbing discovery was later linked to Akim Nyanga Murembeni (80), who had been missing since June 16 this year.
His disappearance had been reported a week later, on June 23, by his granddaughter, Mrs Esma Matewa (50) of Makwanya Village under Chief Tandi.
Realising the remains could belong to the missing villager, Sekuru Kanyuchi alerted the family.
Mrs Matewa arrived at the scene and immediately made a heart-wrenching identification, confirming that the skull was indeed that of her grandfather.
Shaken villagers then mobilised and followed the dog’s tracks into the nearby bush, where they discovered more remains of Murembeni in an advanced state of decomposition.
Police were called to the scene, and the remains were collected and taken to Rusape General Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, confirmed the incident and said investigations are underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.
