A 23-YEAR-OLD man from Tsholotsho died after he was run over by two donkey-drawn scotch carts in a hit-and-run incident.
The deceased, identified as Shelton Ndlovu, was struck while walking home under the influence of alcohol, accompanied by five friends.
Matabeleland North Police spokesperson Inspector Glory Banda confirmed the incident, which occurred last Friday.
He said the deceased was among a group that had been returning from Dlamini Business Centre at around 7pm when the tragic accident occurred.
“At around 10pm, Ndlovu, who had been drinking, complained of exhaustion and thirst. He sat down in the middle of the road while his friends, Tinotenda Moyo (21), Letshani Moyo (17), Jafter Moyo (17), Somandla Moyo (19), and Thumamina Ncube (21), sat nearby. Eventually, Ndlovu fell asleep on the road,” said Insp Banda.
It was at this point that two donkey-drawn scotch carts approached at high speed.
While Ndlovu’s friends managed to flee, the unconscious man remained on the road and was struck by both carts. The drivers did not stop, and police are treating it as a hit-and-run accident.
After the accident, Ndlovu’s friends searched for him but were unsuccessful, ultimately returning home.
The following day, the body of Ndlovu, which had begun decomposing, was discovered on a footpath by Ganga Line village head, Mr Mathias Moyo. A report was made to Tsholotsho Police Station, and officers attended the scene.
Insp Banda said upon examination, Ndlovu’s body showed signs of trauma, including a swollen face, blood clots at the mouth, abrasions on his arms, and bruises on his cheek and stomach.
The body was taken to Tsholotsho District Hospital mortuary, pending a post-mortem examination, which will be conducted at the United Bulawayo Hospitals.
Insp Banda said investigations are in progress.
“We are also appealing to anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects in this hit-and-run incident to contact any nearest police station,” he said.
