call it the very reason why we lose value in the things that matter the most.
That said, I wish to get down to business by pointing out that for one to get success they need integrity, honesty and consistency.
I believe these are underlying factors, which will separate billionaires from those that fall by the wayside, so to speak.
According to our Lord Jesus Christ, no one who puts his hand on to the plough and looks back is worthy of the kingdom (a good example in this agro season).
It is that simple; you can only go as far as your integrity and consistency will take you.
I have had the opportunity of reading many contracts, particularly in inter-regional and or inter-continental trade.
One issue of importance that is usually highlighted is that of consistency. The ability to deliver the same quantity in the set period at the agreed quality.
So how does that affect you, you may wonder. Well, one thing for sure is that for many, their first million will not come all at once.
It will take a repeated and consistent effort on your part. A million dollars is really a dollar made a million times.
Yes, it is easier said than done but look at it this way. If you could do it once then why not try to repeat it till you drop?
A question was asked recently, what can we as a nation say is our core fibre? What sets us apart as a nation?
There are core values I believe anyone wishing to become anything significant in life has to live by. You need to make a conscious decision to operate under a set of core values, which will allow you to reach your goals.
I have through experience learnt that there is nothing that can be substituted for integrity, honesty and consistency.
I am reminded of this everyday. No matter how well meaning you may be, stick to integrity. It will save you tonnes.
Once trust is broken in business and in any other relationship for that matter is difficult to restore.
Matter of fact I believe it is easier to build trust than it is to restore it once broken.
Speaking from my short life in business, I have come to learn that people don’t observe intentions, they respond to actions.
So when at times your actions don’t fall in line with your intentions sit down, pause and restart.
But stand by the truth. Money favours integrity. At times there is a legitimate expectation set in motion when words are spoken.
A promise to pay will set in motion virtual transactions on the basis of one word which when broken will not bring one down but three or four others along the way.
Money will go wherever there is good moral fibre. Look I am not trying to start an argument over how wrong money is made.
My mother taught me right, if I should fail then it’s gross moral contamination on my part, but I believe when we were growing up we were all set straight on what was right and what was wrong.
If we are to make it big so to speak, we will need to get there with integrity and strong moral fibre.
We need to be unflinching in the face of opposition and standing on good corporate governance. It requires men and women of character.
I know of a man whose word was so strong and binding, it was enough to set a contract in motion.
He was known so much for the stability and strength of his word that once spoken you could expect that come rain come thunder you would find him standing on his very word.
His word became his bond and he stuck by it. How great it would be if we all lived in the same way.
The Bible does say your gift will take you before great men. I believe it’s more than your ability to exercise a skill but it is also exhibited in your character.
Your next million may not be hanging on the interpretation of your skill but rather on the revelation of your character.
In the few years I have been in business I have come to the reasonable conclusion that there are places where your money can’t take you but your character. Your character will open more doors for you.
The journey to a million starts with a dollar. Respect the dollar but moreso respect the process in which you made it.
If you can still have a good night’s sleep after counting the money in your wallet then good for you. In this season where liquidity is low and everyone is in a rush to clinch the next best deal. Make sure you stand on the right principles.
A number of organisations run courses on ethics, corporate governance and business culture. At times we take these for granted but I have seen contracts fall through because the investor doubted the moral character of the board of directors or something along those lines.
There is hope if you will decide to make a turnaround and reorganise yourself and your organisation, you can be recognised as the man or woman of strong business character that you should be.
Stay blessed and be well.
