BULAWAYO is reeling after two fatal hit-and-run accidents in just over a month claimed the lives of pedestrians along city streets.

The first tragedy occurred on 10 September at the intersection of Robert Mugabe Way and Connaught Avenue. A male pedestrian, yet to be identified, was walking in a black T-shirt and blue trousers when he was struck by an unknown motorist who fled the scene. He sustained head injuries and bruises to his chest and knees and was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital, where he “succumbed to the injuries at around 06:00 hours,” Bulawayo deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Thandekile Ndlovu said.

Earlier, on 16 August along Khami Road near Mpopoma Drive, another pedestrian, Melu Ngwenya, was hit by a motorist who “did not stop after the accident.” Ngwenya, wearing black jeans, a black T-shirt, and slippers, was ferried to Mpilo Central Hospital by ambulance but “only managed to mention his name to the Ambulance crew and he succumbed to the injuries upon admission,” confirmed Asst Insp Ndlovu. She urged caution for both drivers and pedestrians. “We encourage drivers to exercise proper look out when driving, and also desist from the tendency of running away after an accident but instead render assistance in any way possible,” she said. The deputy provincial police spokesperson also advised the public, “We invite those who might be missing their relative to visit Mpilo Hospital or any nearest police for body identification.”

Police investigations into both hit-and-run cases are ongoing as authorities continue the search for the motorists responsible for the tragic deaths.
