THIS Saturday will see the staging of the penultimate event of the ever exciting 2013 Telecel Drag Racing series at Donnybrook Racetrack in Harare. Drag racing, which saw a re-birth last year in January with the formation of the Dragpro Club, has now become the largest motorsport event in Zimbabwe.
Dragpro Club’s message is “whatever your ride, you are welcome at Dragpro events” and drag racing is open to anyone with a drivers licence and roadworthy vehicle.
In fact, drag racing is the ideal place to see what you and your car can do and it doesn’t cost a fortune either!
The event provides a safe and legal place for drivers to test their vehicles to the limit. Previous experience is not necessary, you can use this event either to have fun with friends or as a serious test day, whether your vehicle is for road or track.
Drivers can register on the day of the event between 10:30am and 2:30pm. Registration allows drivers unlimited runs during the qualifying/grudge match period between 11:30am and 3pm.
Thereafter drivers are also given the opportunity to compete in the end of day Eliminator Event.
In catering for a wide range of different vehicles, the competition is split into classes so competitors can see how similar cars compare to their own.
There are currently eight classes for cars and three classes for motorcycles, so a wide range of vehicles can be seen on the track at any one event fighting it out amongst their respective classes.
Prizes and trophies are awarded at every Dragpro Club event to the top first, second and third-placed in every class.
A word from the Dragpro Club secretary, Susan Zevgolis, to prospective new competitors: “Don’t worry if you have a small or slow car: it’s great fun whatever you drive, and there is always someone slower than you! Remember also that the more powerful the car you are driving, the more difficult it is to get it right.
“So, go ahead and tell someone . . . Let us know please what cars and bikes we can expect on Saturday . . . Skylines, Subarus, BMWs, Mercs, V8s, GSXRs, ZX14s, Yamaha R6s? What’s your ride?
“Race the Track, not the Street.”
And as an incentive to competitors, Turbo Solutions Africa is offering US$500 cash to the first car to break into the 10-second bracket and another US$500 to the first bike to break into the nine-second bracket, at either of the last two remaining events of the 2013 Telecel Drag Racing Series.
Gates on Saturday open at 10:30 am and briefing/training for new competitors is at 11 am. New drivers or current competitors with queries should report to the start line at 11am.
Racing starts 11:30 am.
Dragpro Club are also offering free registration to the first 10 drivers to register in the morning. Registration opens at 10:30 am.
Admission for spectators has been pegged at US$5 per person (children under 10 years free)
