A 26-year-old Harare motorist was sentenced to two years in prison and had his driver’s licence cancelled after being convicted of culpable homicide at the Mbare Magistrates’ Court following a fatal road traffic accident that claimed the life of a minor.

According to a statement from the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPA), Hatumi Tinashe was convicted after he struck a child pedestrian while driving a Toyota Hiace along an unnamed road in Crowborough.

“He struck a child pedestrian who was crossing the road and the victim was pronounced dead upon arrival at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital as a result of severe head injuries,” reads the statement.

The NPA said the court found Hatumi negligent for failing to keep a proper lookout and take reasonable action when a collision became imminent.

He pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment. The court further prohibited him from driving for two years and ordered the cancellation of his driver’s licence.

In a statement, the NPA said the ruling sends a strong message that negligent driving which endangers lives will not be tolerated.
