A 20-year-old motorist has been sentenced to three years in prison after being convicted of culpable homicide arising from a crash that resulted in a death.

According to a statement by the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), Tadiwa Muswere was sentenced by the Harare Magistrates’ Court to five years’ imprisonment, with two years suspended on condition of good behaviour, leaving an effective three-year term.

The court heard that on July 4, 2025, at about 1.45 pm, along Nemakonde Road near the Westgate roundabout, Muswere was driving at excessive speed when he lost control of his vehicle and collided with a Toyota Quantum carrying 10 passengers.

As a result of the crash, an eight-year-old passenger later died from injuries sustained.

The court ruled that Muswere had been negligent by speeding, failing to keep a proper lookout and failing to maintain control of his vehicle.

His driver’s licence was cancelled and he was barred from driving for two years.
