A DRIVER, 40, lost more than US$18 000 to armed robbers he had offered transport for a trip into the Harare CBD.
Fortune Rupiya, a driver at Norton-based company, Moreyear Investments, collected US$18 400 from a company located in the Harare industrial sites. He then picked up two men, along Lytton Road, who intended to get into the Harare CBD.
According to the police, one of the passengers produced a knife and demanded cash from him.
The other passenger produced an unidentified pistol and pointed it at Fortune.
He was ordered to turn into Nyashanu Road in Rugare, Harare, where he surrendered his wallet containing US$15 and two cellphones.
The robbers searched the vehicle and took away an envelope containing US$18 400.
An unregistered blue Honda Fit emerged and whisked the robbers away.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the case.
“Police are investigating an armed robbery case involving US$18 400.
“The complainant had offered the suspects transport from Lytton Industries into the Central Business Centre when they pounced at him along the way,” said Insp Chakanza.
