NINE Bulawayo driving school instructors were recently each fined $100 or 30 days imprisonment for operating without valid licences.

The instructors, who were netted in a joint blitz by the police and Traffic safety Council of Zimbabwe, were convicted by Bulawayo magistrate Tinashe Tashaya.

Themba Sibanda of Success Driving School, Mbiriri Alouise of Chiyangwa Driving School, Mtshutshisi Mpofu of Blue Island, Lungisani Problem Khumalo of Series Driving School and Xolani Tshuma of Reality Driving School all pleaded guilty to contravening a section of the Road Traffic Regulations.

Christopher Madzana of Your Driving School, Takarwisana Zimheni of Progressive Driving School, Nqobani Silengane of Pocher Driving School and Panganai Mucherera of African Jet Driving School also pleaded guilty to the same charge.

They were all fined $100 each which they were ordered to pay immediately and in default 30 days imprisonment.

Tashaya said in future driving schools that hire unregistered instructors should be charged as accomplices.

Prosecuting, Charles Danda said on June 17, the police and the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe were on an operation code-named Sesikubonile.

He said police stopped the motor vehicles in which the instructors were giving practical driving instructions to learner drivers.

“They all failed to produce a certificate of registration as either a certified driving or assistant instructor,” Danda said.
