MAQHAWE Masuku of Sibantubanye village in Insiza South, Matabeleland South province, is preparing to launch a novel on drug awareness.

Titled “Mhla Zinhlanu kuLwezi”, the Ndebele novel which translates to “November 5” will be launched on August 9 at the Filabusi Centre District Council Community Hall.

The 202-page novel, penned by the father of four who is a Poultry and Piggery supervisor at Gwanda State University, aligns with the government’s zero-tolerance approach to drug and substance abuse in the country.  Speaking to Chronicle Showbiz, Masuku shared that he began writing the book in 2019 after recognising the rampant spread of drug and substance abuse in societies.

“I started writing this novel in 2019, but due to other commitments, I only completed it this year. This is a must-read book that not only focuses on drugs but also promotes unity among different ethnic groups, fostering the exchange of meaningful economic ideas in the country. This will provide youths with proper role models to emulate,” he said.

The author said the novel reflects President Mnangagwa’s philosophy of “Ilizwe lakhiwa ngabanikazi balo/nyika inovakwa nevene vayo”. He also expressed his passion for youth empowerment, highlighting the importance of identity and self-worth.

“I want to highlight the importance of being a fruitful individual to the youth. I embrace President Mnangagwa’s philosophy, which says ‘ilizwe lakhiwa ngabanikazi balo’. No youth must be left behind. The youth must not suffer from an identity crisis; they must feel loved and important.

“We need to invest in them if we are to build a strong and beautiful future. They must aspire beyond mediocrity. I’m bringing the youth to President Mnangagwa’s brick-upon-brick policy to build our beautiful Zimbabwe,” he added.

He mentioned that over 200 people are expected to attend the event, which will be graced by a local minister.
Masuku encouraged attendees to wear traditional attire on the launch day, promising presents for those who comply with the dress code.

“Inspiration comes from the desire to treasure our ethics in Ubuntu and safeguard our language against extinction. On the launch day, we’ll display various traditional artefacts, including spearheads and wooden sticks. There’ll also be awards for school pupils and presents for the best-dressed adults in traditional attire,” Masuku said.
