WORK on the dualisation of a 16-kilometre section of the Harare–Masvingo–Beitbridge Highway at the Ngundu Escarpment is
progressing well.
The dualisation will enhance safety and traffic flow as part of the Harare–Beitbridge Road rehabilitation and upgrading project.
The project involves creating a four-lane dual carriageway (two lanes in each direction) and aims to improve infrastructure and
connectivity in the country.
It will also improve regional connectivity, support economic growth and facilitate smoother transit for passengers and freight.
In a statement, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development confirmed the developments.
“Construction is in progress on the Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge Road rehabilitation and upgrading project. Sixteen kilometres
of dualisation is now underway on the Ngundu section,” the ministry said.
Construction of the Manyame River Bridge, a key component of the Harare-Beitbridge road upgrading project, is also on
schedule for completion in October.
The strategic bridge will enhance the flow of traffic along one of Zimbabwe’s busiest commercial routes.
In Masvingo, construction continues on the Mucheke River Bridge (Chevron Bridge) as part of the comprehensive Harare-
Masvingo-Beitbridge road upgrade project.
On the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls highway project, the authorities recently mobilised five reputable contractors — Fossil
Contracting, Masimba Contracting, Syvern Investments, Bitumen Resources and Tensor Systems — with completion targeted
in 10 months.
The ministry said, “Construction is in full swing on the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road (Hwange section).
This crucial rehabilitation is not just about asphalt; it’s about: boosting tourism by enhancing the gateway to the majestic
Victoria Falls; strengthening trade by creating a more reliable corridor for business; and improving safety by delivering a safer
drive for all road users.
“We are building more than a road; every metre paved brings us closer to a more connected Zimbabwe.”
Meanwhile, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona will this week lead a delegation of other ministers,
legislators on a tour of road infrastructure projects in Masvingo and Matabeleland South provinces.
The delegation will tour the Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge Road works, which include the Trumpet Interchange (flyover) bridges
and urban bypass in Masvingo, Mucheke River bridge, Ngundu dualisation section, and a tour of the Mwenezi section.
They will also commission the Road Department Maintenance Unit in Beitbridge before touring the Gwanda-Maphisa road
rehabilitation project.
In Matabeleland South province, there will be a tour of Maitengwe Border Post Road construction project (1,5km along the
Plumtree-Maitengwe Border Post Road from Plumtree Town).
Once complete, the road will ease congestion and boost trade as it links directly to Botswana through the busy Maitengwe
Border Post.
