boxer, Flo Simba, when he was knocked out in a non-title bout on Monday night at Emperors’ Palace, Johannesburg, in South Africa.
Simba was born in DRC but he now fights as a South African.
The Zimbabwean heavyweight fighter was knocked out in the third round of an eight round bout by the 22-year-old.
According to reports from South Africa, a huge right hand by Simba sent the overweight Zimbabwean to the canvas and the count was 2minutes 10seconds into the round.
Dube was fortunate that it was a non-title bout because he could have lost his belt. The 28-year-old, who had won three of his four previous fights, was expected to put up a tough challenge against his opponent but failed to live up to expectations. Dube last had an international fight in 2009 when he beat Jack Ells in South Africa to claim the WBA Pan-African championship title. Dube conceded defeat but said lack of sponsorship has been his major setback, as he can not have proper training.
“It was a tough match. The guy was coming too strong for me. In the third round I didn’t see his punch coming, he caught me unaware.
“I haven’t been fighting for quite sometime and I did not have sparring partners and as a result I did not have proper training. It was an advantage for my opponent.
“This (Simba) guy was coming from a fight and he has the resources, he is always in the ring.
“If I had had proper sparring and training I would have won that match. I know I can beat him,” said Dube.
Dube said there was need for all stakeholders in boxing to take the sport seriously.
“For other countries fighting is serious business but I don’t have anyone helping me, I am struggling alone.
“I know I have disappointed so many fans in Zimbabwe but well, it’s a game, there is a win and a lose but I do not want to keep on losing,” said Dube.
“The national heavyweight champion, who has become overweight of late, admitted that he needs to work on his body to shed the extra weight.”
