FORMER Zimbabwe and Pan African heavyweight boxing champion Thamsanqa Dube is desperately looking forward to bouncing back into the ring after a three-year sabbatical with a fight in Durban, South Africa, tomorrow.The boxer-cum-musician’s last bill was in August 2011 when he was knocked out by South Africa’s Flo Simba.
Johannesburg based World Boxing Federation African heavyweight champion Elvis “Bulawayo Bomber” Moyo is working round the clock to get an opponent for “The Tanker” or “Baby Elephant” as Dube is affectionately known.
“Thamu (Dube) is trying to make a comeback and has been training for a while here in Johannesburg. He seems to be getting back in shape and will be fighting in Durban on Saturday if we manage to get him a replacement opponent. The guy who he was supposed to fight chickened out and we should be getting feedback from a contact based in Durban tomorrow (Saturday),” said Moyo.
He said the challenge they were facing is that Dube is a super-heavyweight (over 125kg) and there are a few in South Africa who can match his weight.
Tipped to scale to greater heights after beating Jack Els to the Pan African heavyweight title at Emperors Palace in 2009, lack of fights saw Dube disappear into oblivion.
