Dube wins Wafawafa Cycling Challenge

MUTUAL cycling club on Sunday announced their official affiliation to the national cycling mother-body Cycling Zimbabwe and the Sports and Recreation Committee.President Brian Machekera announced the news to cyclists and spectators who attended the club’s  Wafa-wafa event held along Matopos road on Sunday.

Mutual’s registration with Cycling Zimbabwe brings the number of cycling clubs in Bulawayo to two, the first being Flying Eagles Cycling Club.

Meanwhile, Nkulumo Dube won the Wafawafa Cycling Challenge held along Matopos Road on Sunday.

Dube finished the 40km distance in one hour 54 minutes 08 seconds. Mthokozisi Sibanda settled for second position in the elite category of the competition crossing the finishing line in one hour 55 minutes 35 seconds.

Knowledge Khuphe was third in one hour 56 minutes 14 seconds. Khuphe led at some stage having broken free in the first 20km of the race. He lost his lead to Dube towards the end of the competition to take home R300.

For winning the race Dube took home R500 while Sibanda pocketed R400.

The event was organised by the city’s Mutual Cycling and Human Rights Lawyers.

The cyclists rode from Tshabalabala entry gate along Matopos road to camp Amalinda where they turned back to the starting point.
Machekera congratulated Dube for winning the event.

“Congratulations to Dube for winning the race, it was a challenging race and everyone who was watching seemed to enjoy it,” said Machekera.

“We’re appealing for sponsorship from the corporate world and any well wishers who want to support our club, we’ll take any kind of assistance,” he said.

Times recorded by cyclists in the race will be used by Cycling Zimbabwe to pick athletes who will represent the country in international events.
