DUMPSITES have re-emerged in Dzivaresekwa after the end of Operation Chenesa Harare.
In the absence of a waste management plan, residents seem to have no choice but to dispose of their garbage illegally, raising health concerns and environmental dangers.
While residents acknowledge the success of Operation Chenesa Harare, without regular waste collection, litter problems will continue.
A resident, John Malizani, said Operation Chenesa Harare marked a new beginning, but litter problems will continue without regular waste collection.
“We are left with no choice but to dispose of our garbage at these dumpsites. It’s disheartening to witness our surroundings deteriorating,” said Malizani.
Grace Chikono said the illegal dumpsites are not only an eyesore but also a breeding ground for diseases.
“We fear for the health and safety of our children. The City Council needs to take immediate action to address this issue before it spirals out of control,” said Chikono.
Sharon Mhlanga said the dumpsites have a negative impact on the environment.
Peter Chisango called for accountability from the authorities, saying the Council must be held responsible for its failure to collect trash.
“We demand transparency and effective waste management strategies.
“It is the responsibility of Council to ensure the well-being of the residents and we expect nothing less,” said Chisango.
