Duo charged with murder of former CIO head

opened in Masvingo yesterday.

Clemence Munyanyi (43) of Ingwani Village in Sengwe rural area in Chikombedzi and Zibusiso Moyo (31) of Nketa 6 Suburb in Bulawayo allegedly fatally shot the former CIO boss in Chiredzi Regis Dongonda outside Chishamiso Beerhall in the town.

The two are also accused of attempting to kill Dongonda’s female companion Rudo Mavimbo and another charge of attempted robbery. Yesterday the duo was formally charged with murder, attempted murder and attempted robbery when their trial began before Justice Samuel Kudya, sitting in Masvingo on circuit. The attempted murder and robbery charges arose after the duo also allegedly shot and seriously injured Mavimbo and tried to take away a Ford Ranger vehicle belonging to Dongonda. Justice Kudya is hearing the case with assessors Mr Eliphas Gweru and Mr Samson Mutomba.

Munyanyi and Moyo, who are being represented by Mr Charles Ndlovu of Ndlovu and Hwacha, are denying the charges.
Prosecutor Mr Elson Chavarika told the court that on June 18, 2009 at Chishamiso Beerhall in Chiredzi the pair allegedly shot Dongonda, who was sitting in his car with Mavimbo with a 9mm Norinco pistol on the left cheek killing him.

Mr Chavarika said the pair also shot and severely injured Mavimbo on the left arm with the same pistol and they then tried to take away the vehicle.
After killing Dongonda the two fled and police recovered spent cartridges. Munyanyi is arguing that he was not in Chiredzi when Dongonda was killed. He says he was in Mhondoro where he runs a general dealer shop.

Three State witnesses have so far testified in the matter, which continues today with more witnesses testifying.
