Beijing — Alexander Cirk from Den Helder in Holland met a Chinese woman online. He really fell for her, so hard that he even changed his Facebook profile picture to a photo of her.
They chatted online for two months, and then Cirk decided it was time to meet her in real life — and it almost killed him. The 41-year-old Dutchman flew all the way to Changsha Huanghua International Airport in China to meet the woman only known by her surname, Zhang, Metro reported.
He waited for her to meet him at the airport, and waited and waited — for 10 days — but she never showed up. He most likely would have waited longer, but eventually he had to be hospitalised for exhaustion after sitting on a bench at the airport for over a week.
It seems Zhang, whose cellphone was switched of while her Romeo was pining away at the airport, thought that Cirk was joking when he messaged her a picture of his flight details, the Chinese news service CCTV News reported.
When a Hunan television channel contacted Zhang, she was caught off guard. She told them she thought it was a joke, because Cirk had agreed to fly to Changsha a year later.
“We had advanced our romantic relationship but later he seemed a little callous toward me,” Zhang said. “One day he sent me a photo of air tickets, and I thought it was a joke. He didn’t contact me later.”
She was away getting plastic surgery and didn’t see any of Cirk’s messages after his plane had landed in China.
She is not giving up on him yet and told the TV channel that she would like to meet Cirk when she has recovered from surgery and that she is still interested in continuing their relationship.
Cirk has bought a ticket home and should fly back on Monday. — News24.
