property that includes a bus, three vehicles, four milling machines and a compressor.
The property, worth several thousand dollars, was allegedly stolen at the company’s branches in Chegutu, Kadoma and Gweru and used to open an engineering company in Harare.
David Whitehead has been under judicial management for some time now. A number of the company’s shareholders have expres-sed concern over allegations some managers were on an asset-stripping spree of the company.
Mangena (39) appeared in court on two counts of theft.
He was not asked to plead before Harare magistrate Mr Kudakwashe Jarabini, who remanded him out of custody to June 8 this year on US$1 000 bail.
Mangena was ordered to surrender the title deeds of his Ruwa house and report three times a week to the police.
Prosecutor Mr Tapiwa Kasema alleged that between January and February this year, Mangena connived with Andrew Shungu Toendepi, still at large, to deprive David Whitehead Textiles shareholders of their property.
The pair allegedly stole machinery from the company’s branches in Kadoma, Chegutu and Gweru.
In Gweru, they allegedly stole a Silven lathe machine, Colehester lather machine, three milling machines, two bench grinders, two power saws, two welding machines, a Bauknecht drilling machine, a Relmo bench grinder, a pallet trolley and a Nissan Hardbody vehicle.
In Chegutu they allegedly seized a Relmo compressor, Mazda 323 and an AVM bus.
In Kadoma they allegedly stole a lathe machine, Jogan FU3 milling Machine, EFI drilling machine, a power saw and a Mazda T35 truck.
The pair allegedly took the machinery and vehicles to No. 38 Craster Road in Workington industrial area in Harare where they clandestinely formed a merger with an engineering company, Wheelmate (Pvt) Ltd.
It is alleged the company has two directors, Darlington Breakfast and his wife Farai.
But according to papers lodged with the Registrar of Companies, the wife proposed to resign as a director and appoint Mangena as co-director.
The bus is now registered in the name of Underhill Investments, which has no business with David Whitehead Textiles.
It is alleged to operate as a commuter omnibus. Mangena was arrested last week, after which he allegedly helped police to recover two vehicles and machinery worth US$150 000.
The State further alleges that during the same period the two sold scrap metal in South Africa for R1 872 500. They converted the money to their own use.
