A prophet doesn’t have honour in his country.”
The above lines from John 4 verse 44 have become a comforting biblical allusion used by many creatives who fail to achieve success in their hometown, Bulawayo, only to excel elsewhere especially in South Africa’s city of gold.
Names like Bekezela of the Bekezela fame, Berita, DJ Zwesta SA and DJ Quest are some of the testaments who failed to be appreciated in the city but went on to successfully represent Bulawayo to the world.
Joining the endless list is Hwange-born hip-hop sensation Dylan Nyambe otherwise known as Dweezy Bwoi Wonder who has proven to be a strong force in Mzansi’s music scene after the city of Kings rejected him.
Dweezy Bwoi’s musical prowess has seen him being recognised in numerous awards this year including Golden Arts Media Awards (GAMA) and Mzansi Arts Media Awards (MAMA) where he is nominated for Best Hip Hop Artiste on both awards.
Both award ceremonies are slated for early December.
He is also nominated at the United States of America’s Slem Awards set for 4 November courtesy of his single Going Krazy featuring Cal_vin and Nigeria’s duo of Lil Dizzie and MoSheenor.
From his base in Jozi, Dweezy Bwoi said: “I feel motivated big time and much appreciated for the love and support I’m getting in a foreign land, something l couldn’t get back home.”
He feels like the city must provide support to local artistes instead of claiming their success when they have made it in other countries.
“It is said charity begins at home, by that l mean I am grateful for the little appreciation I got from Bulawayo. Home will always be home; we don’t want many things as artistes, we just want their (Bulawayo people’s) support.
“Even godfathers and mafias who run the showbiz industry in Bulawayo must learn to appreciate new talent than to keep on hyping same old cats that are already established. We make it out of the city then we get claimed to be from Bulawayo again, it’s absolutely not a good vibe,” said Dweezy Bwoi.
Meanwhile, the artiste is closely working with Mzansi’s finest former Ambitiouz Records female rapper Fifi Cooper in helping promote his music.
Dweezy Bwoi Wonder relocated to Mzansi in late 2017 in search of greener pastures.
