DYNAMOS’ remote prospects of winning an unprecedented fifth consecutive Castle Lager Premier Soccer League were extinguished as the champions were held to a draw by Flame Lily at Lafarge Stadium yesterday.

DeMbare ,who are now on 47 points, had a chance to cut Chicken Inn’s lead to three points ahead of the log leaders’ clash with fellow title-chasers FC Platinum in Bulawayo on Wednesday but they couldn’t unlock a well set up home side.

Gift Phiri stunned the champions with a 35th minute free kick that sailed under the Dynamos wall, which jumped in anticipation of a high ball, and beat a stranded Tatenda Mukuruva. Left back Carlos Rusere restored parity five minutes later with a pile driver that beat goalie Lloyd Majarira for pace. Dynamos gaffer Tonderai Ndiraya says DeMbare are now playing to finish in a respectable position.

“I have already said it is no longer in our hands from that day we dropped points against Harare City. We play every match to win and our focus now is on winning the remaining matches so that we can finish in a respectable position.

We knew Lafarge was going to be a difficult place with the bumpy pitch but that’s no excuse because we should have adjusted,” said Ndiraya.

The prison wardens are still languishing in the relegation zone, on 14th position with 23 points, but their rookie coach Takesure Chiragwi maintains the point they picked yesterday is crucial in their fight for survival.

“I am happy with the draw, the guys proved that we can go on and escape the chop. Getting one point is good for us, it was part of the game plan,” said Chiragwi.

“We could have chosen to attack them in the second half but still that point we got is an addition to the 22 points we had and it can prove to be important at the end.”
