ZANU-PF Mberengwa North legislator CdeTafanana Zhou has appealed to Government to assist families of the six children who were killed in a car accident on Friday along Mbalabala-Masvingo road.
The accident left 16 others injured. Six were seriously injured and are admitted to different hospitals in Bulawayo and Zvishavane. Cde Zhou said he was waiting for a response from Government to accord the victims State-assisted burials.
“We are mourning as Mberengwa community and as a nation the loss of our children. We are working with the families of the victims to know what is needed so that we give proper assistance,” he said.
Cde Zhou said one of the six seriously injured children was still on life support at United Bulawayo Hospitals while the other five were in stable condition.
“We are praying for speedy recovery to those who are still admitted to the hospital. We hope for God’s grace to save their lives,” said Cde Zhou.
He urged motorists to be take precautions on the roads and respect the lives of people.
“The driver was only 20 years old but Government policy on who should drive public transport is very clear — 25 years. Authorities must monitor such movements and bring to book those who are breaching the law.”
According to witnesses, the accident occurred when the driver of a Granvia Toyota, which the children were travelling in, tried to avoid a head-on collision after he overtook a vehicle in front of an ox-drawn scotch cart.
The car veered off the road and the driver lost control of the vehicle before it overturned and rolled twice and landed on its wheels. Five children died on the spot and one upon admission to Zvishavane District Hospital.
