DZ development tourney

ZIMBABWE international, Sebastien Summerfield, who plays for Switzerland’s second tier league side, FC Kilchberg, hosted an Under-16 tournament at Dzivarasekwa Stadium on Monday.

Four teams, DZ Academy, City Rangers, First Step Academy and Four Men Academy, participated in the tournament.

DZ Academy won the tournament after edging First Step 3-0 in the final.

The tournament was organised by Sydney Savanhu.

Summerfield said the tournament was the brainchild of coach, Nesbert Saruchera.

“The idea of this tournament first came up when I spoke to coach Saruchera and we spoke about the importance of developing grassroots football,” said Summerfield.

“We chose Dzivarasekwa because I have a strong relationship with coach Saruchera, Bill Antonio and Kelvin Mangiza, who are from here.

“Coach Saruchera helped and inspired me to be the person I am today, so I saw it wise to repay what these people have done to me in this way.” The 20-year-old funded the tournament and he said he is eager to make the tournament an annual event.

“I think this could be the start of something good. A lot of people have seen that this event brought smiles to this community, especially to the youngsters who participated,” he said.

“I’m now based in Europe, but my wish would be to see this tournament becoming an annual event.

“I’m going to make sure that this competition is played whenever I return home.”

Summerfield almost joined Dynamos last season before he joined FC Kilchberg.

He has played for Zimbabwe Under-20.

Summerfield has also had the privilege to train with Chelsea Under-12s, Barcelona Summer Camp Under-15, FK Dukla Under-18, KAS Eupen Under-23 and Gateshead Under-19.
