MASHONALAND Eagles have set their eyes on winning the Logan Cup in the Zimbabwe cricket 2013/14 season as their priority.
They also want to win the domestic Twenty20 championship that they lost to Mountaineers in the final last season. The Eagles, winners of the 50-over championship, have their eye set on the first-class trophy which remains in the Matabeleland Tuskers cabinet while the Eagles finished last season bottom of the log.
Veteran bowling all-rounder Propser Utseya said his team is focused on getting at least two trophies this season. “We had a meeting on Thursday to map out our goals and we identified the areas we had to work on from last season,” said Utseya.
“We did not bat very well and that let us down a lot especially when you look at the nature of the season where we are affected by rain a lot. “This means that if you lose a game you may never get a chance to recover in time and when we did lose, we were too far behind to have any chance to redeeming ourselves.” The official fixtures of the 2013/14 cricket season are not yet out but matches are tentatively set to start on November 9.
Teams are in secret negations with players and different franchises have already set out their ambitions this season.
“I personally agree with the rest of the team the Logan Cup is the most important Cup for us.
“We can win the rest of the trophies but that one means a lot more because it will also help us as national team players to prepare ourselves for future tours and it is a good opportunity to identify new players,” said Utseya. Mash Eagles lost six out of eight matches in the prestigious Logan Cup to finish last.
They lost a home final of the Twenty20 competition and salvaged some pride getting a five run-victory (Duckworth Lewis) in a rained-out final against the Matabeleland Tuskers. According to the Zimbabwe Cricket’s blueprint of national cricket development, the franchise system is designed to harness current and emerging talent with a franchise catchment area.
Mashonaland Eagles have the highest density of players per city with the great part of players living in Harare and Chitungwiza.
