MASHONALAND Eagles coach Steve Mangongo says their 43-run limited overs win over Mid-West Rhinos was the confidence booster they needed ahead of the opening game of the Logan Cup competition against the same opponents today at Harare Sports Club.Eagles are seeking a good start to bury memories from the previous season when they failed to win a single match in the four-day competition.
The Harare side are set to welcome experienced top order batsman Mark Vermeulen who sat out during the first game of the season at the weekend.
Mangongo said they wanted to build on the momentum from Saturday’s win to lay a good foundation for the season.
“We didn’t have the best of seasons in the Logan Cup the last time and that is one area we need to improve this season. Winning the first game of the season is always good for confidence building. We would need to carry the positives into our next game in the Logan Cup.
“We have to bear in mind that in first class cricket that is when your cricket is really put to the test. Your technique, patience and fitness levels are all put under the microscope,” said Mangongo.
The Harare franchise lost key players Stuart Matsikenyeri, Mark Mbofana and Forster Mutizwa but they are not likely to feel the pinch as they manage to retain the bulk of their squad while elevating some players from their structures.
Mangongo is particularly impressed by former Under-19 wicketkeeper Joylord Gumbie who is likely to get his first class debut today.
Eagles have an impressive bowling arsenal that includes Brian Vitori, Admire Manyumwa and Taurai Muzarabani.
Eagles will also be placing their hopes on their top batsmen Sikander Raza, Regis Chakabva, Chamu Chibhabha, Remembrance Nyathi and Elton Chigumbura who are all available for selection.
They have appointed 21-year old Tino Mutombodzi as their skipper and are looking to blood several young players during the year.
