THE curtain comes down on the Eastern Region Division One League this weekend with the race for the coveted title set to be decided on the final day of the season. Log Leaders Dongo Sawmills and second placed Mutare City Rovers are locked in a battle for Premiership promotion that will be left with one winner on Sunday. Mutare City Rovers take on Gutu away in Gutu while log leaders and favourites Dongo Sawmills engage Mwenezana at Vengere stadium in Rusape.
With only two points separating the two sides going into the final round of league fixtures, the stage is set for an exhilarating end to an eventful season that almost turned nasty in recent weeks.
Only last weekend, Mutare City Rovers blew a chance to get on top of the log standings when they conspired to disappoint their fans and succumbed to defeat during the same weekend that Dongo had been held by stubborn Ruwa United away in Ruwa.
This result came only a week after Magusha, as they are adoringly referred to by their fans, could not to show a true champion’s character when they failed to beat Dongo Sawmills at Vengere stadium in Rusape.
Consequently, Dondo Sawmills are now holding the destiny of the Eastern Region Division One title race firmly in their own hands and will only need to beat Mwenezana at Vengere to secure an all important 2015 Premiership slot.
City Rovers fans and officials vented their anger on team manager Lyndon Kanyemba whom they accused of having played a role in influencing his own team’s defeat.
However, Kanyemba vehemently denied making any effort to betray his own.
He said there is still hope that his team can win the championship.
“I have never at point tried to betray my team. I believe that if we win we win as a team and if we lose we lose as a team. I was so hurt that will all the effort that I have been putting I am now on the receiving end being accused of things I known not of.
‘To me hope is the last thing to lose. Soccer being what it is, we are still hoping to get the results that we want. Many thought ZPC ahd won the Premiership title last weekend but we all know what happened. In the same fashion, there is still hope for Mutare City Rovers,” he said.
A city Rovers official Aaron Chemvura took to social media platform Facebook, calling for the ouster of inept elements within the team.
“Gusha bhora yakachekeresa!! Heads must roll,” fumed Chemvura on his Facebook timeline.
Another Mutare soccer enthusiast, Tendai Green
“It is a sad story to the Mutare football community to let go a golden opportunity to have two Premiership teams at Sakubva stadium. On allegations that Mutare city was infested with weevils who derailed the team’s promotion from within, I reserve my comment for now!
“The team performed well after Bokande took over, save for the administrative boobs by the powers that be at the team. However, they have to be comfortable as bridesmaids for the second season.” he said.
