Small to medium entrepreneurs in Mutare are recording improved business transactions following the introduction of EcoCash merchant codes by mobile network provider, Econet Wireless. EcoCash merchant codes enable customers to buy goods and services from both established and growing businesses without the worry of carrying cash. The development, which comes after the reduction of all merchant fees by up to 50 percent, will see small businesses having access to a market of over three million customers who use EcoCash.
Econet Wireless chief executive officer, Mr Douglas Mboweni, said in an interview: “We are encouraged by the growth of small to medium enterprises as an engine for economic growth not only in Mutare, but for the country at large and by availing EcoCash merchant codes, we want our customers, who are increasingly running their own businesses, to see our network as a partner who will help them make more money.
“Our vision remains to transform the way businesses and customers receive and make payments, as we move towards a cashless economy.
“Our message to all small to medium enterprises in Mutare is that EcoCash is open for business to give you the opportunity to increase your customer base and sales.
“EcoCash merchant codes are not only targeting large businesses. We invite you to visit your nearest Econet shops to apply for EcoCash merchant codes.”
A snap survey carried out by this paper in the streets of Mutare revealed that the development has been welcomed by upcoming businesses, as well as customers.
While customers expressed satisfaction with EcoCash payment services at established retailers that have since embraced EcoCash as a form of payment, some small businesses without EcoCash merchant codes were charging extra fees.
Customers have been complaining about the extra charge coming with the send-money option to buy goods, therefore, the move to give small businesses merchant codes has been well received and appreciated, as customers can buy goods at actual prices.
Econet has also indicated that they will closely monitor their merchants and systems to make sure people are not abusing the facility or manipulating it to profiteer.
