In a statement, the company said the number of subscribers had surged from 6,4 million to 7,1 million, reflecting an increase of 700 000 lines since February.
Econet’s nearest competitor Telecel Zimbabwe has about two million subscribers while NetOne is now thesmallest mobile phone network by subscription.
Econet said it had managed to overcome capacity constraints which had resulted in a shortage of its pre-paid lines on the market.
The company temporarily suspended issuing of new lines resulting in the emergence of a black market where a $1 line was sold for $20.
Econet said the shortage of lines was now a thing of the past and its network capacity has been increased to 8,5 million lines.
Meanwhile, Econet Wireless chief executive Mr Douglas Mboweni said more than 90 percent of Zimbabwean businesses were Econet customers under its Business Partna brand.
“Our research shows that corporate Zimbabwe, both big and small, gets its service from Econet,” Mr Mboweni said.
“We are very pleased to see that the most serious business users are our customers now. We are working hard to ensure that we give them the services they need.”
