Econet Wireless yesterday donated eight tonnes of blankets, clothes and food worth US$100 000 to the Tokwe-Mukosi floods victims who have been relocated to Chingwizi in Mwenezi. Speaking at the handover ceremony, Acting Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Joseph Made said despite the situation at Tokwe-Mukosi having improved, more assistance was still needed to mitigate the disaster.
“While the Tokwe-Mukosi was the worst affected by the floods, the unprecedented natural calamity also had devastating effects on other parts of the country, rendering many Zimbabweans homeless and left a trail of destruction to infrastructure,” he said.
The Government has successfully completed relocation of about 3 000 families whose homes and property were destroyed following the recent flooding.
Minister Made said the situation was improving after those affected were moved to new settlements.
He urged other stakeholders to emulate the gesture by Econet Wireless of transforming the lives of the people in the Tokwe-Mukosi flood basin as more donations were still required.
“The floods in Tokwe-Mukosi left the community highly stressed and traumatised,” said Minister Made.
“I want to also take this opportunity to challenge other wireless network providers and indeed other corporates to emulate the tone set by Econet.”
Econet Wireless chief executive officer Mr Douglas Mboweni said they could not ignore donating to the Tokwe-Mukosi disaster.
“We have eight tonnes of goods that have come from our subscribers, from Econet, our Foundation and we promise as Econet that they will be future donations to alleviate the Tokwe-Mukosi disaster,” he said.
