adminclaiming Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Jameson Timba had been arrested in “Mafia style” by Deputy Officer Commanding Law and Order, Chief Superintendent Chrispen Makedenge.
Detectives from Harare Central Police Station picked up the pair in the afternoon.
Chief police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Wayne Bvudzijena confirmed the two had been picked up over allegations of publishing a false story.
“We confirm that we picked up two journalists but one of them (Nyangove) has since been released after being questioned but we are still questioning the editor,” Asst Comm Bvudzijena said.
He said apparently Chief Supt Makedenge was not the one who arrested Minister Timba.
“We are investigating the case. The editor is still assisting us with investigations,” Asst Comm Bvudzijena said.
He said the editor was likely to appear in court on charges of publishing falsehoods.
Allegations against them arose after they published a story in the Standard on June 26 claiming that Minster Timba who had been arrested for labelling President Mugabe “a liar” in a South African Sunday newspaper had been arrested by the “notorious Chrispen Makede- nge”.
They also claimed in their story that Chief Supt Makedenge abducted human rights activist Jestina Mukoko in 2008.
