EDITORIAL : Clear domestic workers with the police

THERE is a worrying surge in cases of domestic workers betraying and killing their employers.

Most domestic workers are turning out to be an extension of criminal syndicates that rob, steal and even kill their employers.

Some of them have access to their employers’ valuables like cash, jewellery and motor vehicles.

Employers become too trusting of them and grant them access to these prized possessions, not knowing that some domestic workers are just criminals waiting to pounce.

H-Metro has published a series of stories in which several domestic workers have been at the forefront of robbing their employers.

In yesterday’s edition, we ran yet another spine-chilling story involving a young Bulawayo couple who allegedly killed their employer.

The daring couple, employed as domestic workers at a farm in Bubi, allegedly killed their employer and dumbed his body in a disused mine shaft. They stole a Nissan X-Trail vehicle, two fire arms and various items. While the deceased’s family is now seeking justice, loss of life could have been prevented had the two not been overcome by greed.

According to reports, the couple wanted to get rich quickly and the somehow convinced themselves that killing their employer was the way to achieve it. Just how they thought they could take someone’s life and possess his assets to riches is mind-boggling.

Their employer was a well-known farmer, and his neighbours were bound to ask about his whereabouts as well as that of the couple. The couple thought they were safe by driving the deceased’s car to a friend in Bulawayo.

Just what they were planning to do, no one knows, but kudos to the friend for smelling a rat.

The couple might have lied to their friend about why they were in possession of their employer’s car, but when he saw the two guns, his sixth sense kicked in and he decided to report them to the police.

These are the kind of friends we need – people that do not shield crime, no matter who has committed it.

The two errant domestic workers have betrayed their employer’s family as well as people who recommended them for the job at the farm which they turned into a death field by chopping the owner with an axe several times.

Their heinous act, has robbed some people of a father, brother and grandfather. It has also rendered some workers on the farm redundant, just a few days before schools open. Other workers that had settled on the farm will probably have to move and look for work elsewhere. That means they will also be forced to uproot their children from the local school at this late period due to the unparalleled greed of a couple that doesn’t believe in hard work, but crime to succeed.

There must be thorough investigations and get to the bottom of this case to ensure whoever might have been involved in planning this murder is also brought to book. People must respect the sanctity of life, and no excuse can absolve them from their satanic deed. It’s sad to note that domestic workers used to be trusted and even embraced as part of the family, but they are now crooks and killers.

It’s domestic workers like this evil couple that give a bad name to this most noble task of being entrusted with virtually running the household.

We advise our people to ensure their domestic workers are vetted by the police so that you don’t end up with a killer in your household who has all the time to plan all manner of evil that brews in their minds.
