As the country marks the long holidays that include Independence Day, we believe it is a good time for merrymaking as families meet and cement their ties.
It is the time that religious gatherings also take place, in some cases involving a lot of travelling to a designated meeting point for fellowship.
We surely wish to look forward to such days with positive expectation rather than trepidation.
However, the history of the holidays is not a good one as we have seen serious loss of life due to human error that could at times be avoided.
With the Good Friday and Easter Monday, coupled with Independence Day holidays, upon us, we would like to add our voice to the many voices of reason urging for safety and responsibility on our roads.
Our roads have claimed too many lives. When travelling long distances, as we are always advised, it is important to rest when drivers feel tired, and motorists also need to ensure their vehicles are in good condition while drinking and driving should also be avoided as it is a factor when it comes to impaired reaction by the motorists.
As the police have already warned, the roads will be teeming with law enforcement agents and motorists should co-operate with the police since their presence on the roads is to ensure that the law is adhered to and our roads kept safe.
It is also on the roads where our people should behave responsibly but even in stadiums, bars, churches and other areas where people will be spending their holidays.
What is important is that people should enjoy their holidays safely and ensure their enjoyment does not turn their neighbours or friendsa�� holidays into a nightmare.A� Do unto others as you would like them to do unto you.
We would also like to caution our school-going youth against hazardous experiments with alcohol and drugs this holiday period as that could lead them into making stupid decisions that they could regret for the rest of their lives.
We are hopeful that it is responsible behaviour that will spare us grim holiday fatalities statistics rather than interventions by law enforcement agents that cannot be everywhere every time.
We need to come to a realisation that safety should be a lifestyle since our reckless behaviour might have a long term impact on some families that could lose relatives or even lose onea��s family as a result of failure to observe safety rules and celebrating to stay alive.
