Editorial Comment: ALL EYES ON MACHESO

AFTER some delays, which was caused by concern among fans that unveiling the album in June would not be ideal because of the cold conditions, Alick Macheso will unveil his latest album in Harare today.

He has named it ‘Kupa Kuturika,’ and it will be unveiled at Alex Sports Club this evening.

The album carries six tracks — Kuverengera, Zvichada Hama, Murangarire, Undiregererewo, Murangarire, Kunditaya and Hunhu Hwakashata.

Macheso has also included an array of supporting acts — Enzo Ishall, Feli Nandi, Saintfloew, Cheso Boys and the Chillspot Family — for the unveiling ceremony.

Traditionally, Macheso unveils his albums at Aquatic Complex in Chitungwiza.

This is where he unveiled his last album and there was chaos as hundreds of his fans could not make it into the arena, which was full hours before he appeared on stage.

It has to be one of the biggest crowds Macheso has ever attracted to his show.

He explained this week that his camp took that into consideration when coming up with a venue where they would launch their next album.

They chose Alex Sports Club because it has a huge ground where thousands of Macheso fans can converge without being forced to go back home because the arena would be full to capacity.

It is also a place that is easy to reach, and some fans can even walk from the Harare CBD to Alex Sports Club for the show.

Macheso’s team says everything is in place for the unveiling of their album.

It will be the 13th album that Macheso has recorded and released in a career that has taken him to the top of his class.

He is the best sungura musician in the country and has been for some time now.

There was a time when Tongai Moyo challenged the throne and it was good for Macheso, too, because he knew that he had to up his game and release very good music to ensure that the challenger would not take over as a king.

That was a very good period for sungura music fans and they were bombarded with hit after hit by these two great musicians.

It’s sad that Tongai died at a young age and did not get the time to really take his music to the heights that he wanted.

We are not saying that he did not write his name in gold but we are saying that he still had a lot to offer.

If Tongai was alive today, Macheso would have been a better musician that what he is today because the competition would have driven him to produce better songs and also better stage acts.

There is a feeling among some of Macheso’s fans that their hero, in recent years, has struggled to reach the levels he touched during the days when he was hitting us with such hits like Shediya.

There is some truth in that.

The challenge for Macheso is to make sure that the 13th album is a big hit. That way he can show many that he is still getting better.
