Editorial Comment: As winter bites, spare a thought for the poor

DROPPING temperatures, which are setting, are no doubt signalling the beginning of the winter season.

Cold spells are known to be harsh and unfriendly.

The rich keep themselves warm while poor souls have to do with what they have.

Sadly, there are some who have nowhere to start from to beat the annual cold spell.

The situation is dire for the homeless who sleep on street corners.

The rural folks are also not spared from these harsh and unpleasant cold nights.

Although it is known that winter is unfriendly, not all people have the means to really prepare themselves to beat the cold.

To help those in need, we are urging those with means to remember the poor by, at least, donating a blanket to the vulnerable.

A pair of shoes, blanket or anything, which can keep others warm, is enough to help the poor.

As H-Metro, we salute individuals, corporate organisations and philanthropists who are committed to this worthy cause.

In recent weeks, charity organisations run by Zimbabweans have been running a “donate-a-blanket” campaign to help others in need.

Most of these people are found in our homes, prisons and even orphanages.

As Zimbabweans, people who are known all over the world to be warm and friendly, we can easily change the narrative and help each other on our own.

Such campaigns can persuade some big companies to follow suit  and play their part in this worthy cause.

Earlier this week, a retail giant was hailed for changing the lives of the poor by donating blankets and warm clothing.

This is the gospel we want to hear during this time of the year.

The giving and sharing culture should be running in our DNA if we are to bring smiles to the poor.

The same love should be extended to children and maternity wards where some mothers and children need warm clothing.

Cold spells are known for fuelling a number of diseases like flu and pneumonia.

Over the years, we have lost many lives to diseases like pneumonia, which affects the lungs.

We need to save the poor by remembering them during this time of the year.

We should also complement the individuals who are mobilising resources to buy stuff which has helped others survive the cold winter night.

With most influencers in the diaspora embracing similar campaigns, it shows they still have their kith and kin at heart.

Our own big spenders at home should also learn a thing or two from these individuals who are committed to charity.

Real influencers should be game-changers and not attention-seeking people.

A rich man, who doesn’t give to the poor is not worth the wealth which God blessed him with.

This is also the right time for top celebrities to use their connections and influence to mobilise resources to assist the poor this winter.

As we celebrate the gift of life, let’s not forget the poor’s plight.
