EDITORIAL COMMENT : Embrace people with fertility issues

BARRENNESS is never on anyone’s wish list.

It tortures the mind, lowers self-esteem and steals one’s sense of pride, if not well managed.

It can also take the weak to the grave since society harshly judges people with fertility challenges.

Embracing this condition and leaving it to God appears to be the solution.

However, it takes one’s sound mental strength to be able to nurse this condition and conquer it.

Those who are mentally fit have embraced this condition.

However, segregation and ridicule remain major obstacles they have to live with. In most cases, these people don’t have peace of mind since they are condemned.

And, it seems it will take ages for society to fully embrace people with fertility challenges.

In some African societies, people suffering from this condition are treated as outcasts.

Extremists regard them as sinners who are paying for their evil deeds.

This cancer has been raging for ages and there is a need for a change of mindset.

People with fertility challenges need love and moral support.

In most cases, it was not by desire that some found themselves barren.

By showing them love, we are sowing seeds of affection and embracing them.

After all, they remain people.

Many marriages have collapsed as a result of this issue.

In the worst case scenarios, it has brought untold suffering in homes if the other party does not embrace it.

Yesterday, we carried a touching story of a woman facing eviction for failure to conceive.

She has endured a 10-year childless marriage.

Her in-laws want to evict her from her matrimonial home to accommodate another woman.

She is now suffering from emotional, physical and verbal abuse.

Despite acquiring the house, together with her husband, the woman is now considered an outcast by her in-laws.

Although it could not be established who has the problem, this woman has already been given the blame.

Sadly, this woman is not alone in this predicament.

There are numerous cases of this nature which need urgent attention.

Some of the victims are now facing psychological problems.

Others have even become victims of gender-based violence as some partners are now tormenting them.

As a way forward, we need to embrace partners with fertility problems and give them a shoulder.

Calling these people names is never a solution but can trigger a lot of major problems like depression, suicide and, of course, low esteem.

There are also some men who are suffering from this problem, who need love.

These men have also lost their self-esteem after being ridiculed by society. This name calling should come to an end.

In cases, where these men have also become victims of gender-based violence, it’s never too late to seek legal recourse.

It’s also not right for men, suffering from this condition, to die in silence for the sake of trying to maintain status.

In a nutshell, barrenness is never a curse but a condition, which needs to be embraced by society.
